Brief Biography

Alwyn Ponteen, MSc
Chief Fisheries and Ocean Governance Officer
Government of Montserrat

Mr Alwyn Ponteen grew up in a fishing family and has been engaged in fishing activities from an early age. His passion for the air and sea qualified him a career job for two decades as an Air Traffic Controller and Meteorological Technician with the Government of Montserrat.

After achieving the ranks of Chief of Air Traffic and Meteorological Service, he was transferred within the Government services as Chief Fisheries and Ocean Governance Officer, with responsibility for the governance, management, development, conservation and sustainable utilization of the ocean resources and associated ecosystems services.

Since completing a Masters in Coastal and Marine Resource Management he has empowered Government to strengthen partnership with, local, regional and international organisations geared towards embarking on an ambitious development program to promote, enhance and advance long term sustainable governance of its ocean resources and associated ecosystems under national jurisdiction.

He is passionate about protecting our oceans while creating sustainable solutions to enrich livelihoods, improve food security and nutrition for ocean dependant stakeholder in the socio- economic development of Small Island Developing States.
