Brief Biography

Dr. Emily Smail
Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center
University of Maryland

Dr. Emily Smail is a Senior Faculty Specialist at the University of Maryland’s (UMD) Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center. At UMD, Emily works to support the NOAA-funded Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites by serving as the Scientific Coordinator for the GEO Blue Planet Initiative. She also serves as the education and outreach coordinator for the NOAA CoastWatch/OceanWatch program. Previously, Emily worked in informal science education at the Waikiki Aquarium and policy at the United States Senate. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California with a focus on marine biogeochemistry and a B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University.
