The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) has endorsed the Community of
Practice (CoP) concept for many years as an important component for delivery of
the GEO activies, both as a way to reach user communities, and as a way to
actively engage science communities in the work of GEO.
In the prior management structure for GEO, the linkages between GEO and the
CoPs were more clearly defined than they are under the new management structure implemented at the end of 2011. Approaching the end of the first 10-year Implementation Plan, it became necessary to revisit the concept of CoPs as it applies to GEO. This was the goal of the the meeting.
The meeting was open to all, and it was being convened to allow all to provide
feedback on the concept of GEO CoPs in general. This meeting seeked to
explore the following questions:
- Are CoPs a useful concept for GEO? If so, how?
If not, why not?
- What should GEO offer CoPs (the assumption is
that the CoPs participate in order to get something out of GEO - what
would that be?)
- If CoPs remain a viable concept, what can be
done to energize or re-energize them?
