ABSTRACT

Gap analysis for the marine component within ConnectinGEO

E. Garcia-Ladona, Joan Massó, Ivette Serral and ConnectinGEO team

Within ConnectinGEO, a gap analysis procedure on geospatial information and data has been carried out related with the Societal Benefit Areas (SBA) arising from GEOSS initiative. In this presentation a review of gaps for the Marine component is presented starting from an "expert view" approach. The gap analysis has targeted the set of Ocean Essential Variables (EOV) established by consensus among the different panels (Physical, Biogeochemical and Marine Ecosystems) as promoted by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Gaps for EOV's have been identified and reviewed based on different international efforts as those undertaken by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) concerning essential climate variables (GCOS-195 report), the GLOSS and GOA observing systems reports and from papers in peer-reviewed literature. Major outcome is a systematic classification of gaps following the GAIA-CLIM view and completed at least for most of the physical and some biogeochemical EOV's. In addition it is shown how some procedures to identify gaps on the marine context can provide supplementary aspect to stablish prioritization rules of sustainable observing networks.
