Marine debris pose a mounting threat to life in the oceans and on land, including human life, and technologies to observe, measure and monitor the flow of debris into, and within, the oceans are urgently needed in support of mitigating the threat.

Brief Biography

Joana Veiga

MSc in Marine Biology, working on the topic of marine litter since 2010, mostly at the science-policy interface. Working for Deltares since 2017; previously for the Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC).

A few projects:

- EU DG Env: Case studies on the plastic cycle and its loopholes in the four European regional seas areas (2012)
- EU FP7: CleanSea (2013-2015)
- EU DG Env: Marine Litter Study to Support the Establishment of an Initial Quantitative Headline Reduction Target (2014)
